Beveled Edges For Steel PlatesThompson Metals and Tubing offers edge beveling services for steel plates. For steel plates up to 2 inches thick, TMT uses a SMT-Pullmax beveling machine and for steel plates greater than 2 inches oxy-fuel is use to cut the edge. For welding joints the bevel is usually cut between 30 and 60 degrees. Why Edge Beveling? When material is removed from the edge of a steel plate a gap for the welding material to fill is created. This beveled edge allows adequate deposition and penetration of the weld creating a stronger joint. For butt welding material 3/8 inches or more often requires some sort of edge preparation before welding. Other joint configurations might also require edge beveling like: corner joints, T joints, lap joints and edge joints. |
