Sheet Metal Bending & Press Brake Basics

The manufacturing process of bending deforms the sheet metal using the plasticity of the material to change its shape. The metal or steel is stressed beyond its yield strength but below its ultimate tensile strength. To bend the sheet metal it is placed on a die and held in place using a stop. Then the upper part of the press brake, or ram, using a shaped punch descends and forms the metal in to a bend.
